Research Scientist

Fisheries Biology and Marine Ecology

Mike Shane came to Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in 1988 as a field research technician on the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program (OREHP).  While working on his graduate degree at San Diego State University, Mike became the field research manager for the OREHP.  During his OREHP career, he has helped to develop techniques for swim bladder deflation and handling of fish collected as broodstock, and he has investigated novel marking techniques for fish and abalone.  Mike also served as a co-principal investigator with several professors from San Diego State University to study the potential impacts to the marine environment associated with a development project along the Orange County coastline.  His current research interests include fisheries assessment of the OREHP and marine environmental studies associated with the aquaculture grow-out of fish in cages. In addition, he serves as the Institute’s diving safety officer.
