Education/Outreach: Promoting Scientific Literacy
A Boy Feeds a Dolphin
HSWRI is dedicated to promoting scientific literacy as a strategy to enhance the nation's understanding of scientific research and its contribution to economic development and community quality of life. As knowledge becomes a driving force in the new global economy, research institutes, universities, government and corporations must work together to make sure that knowledge is generated, transmitted and used for social and economic good.

HSWRI is committed to sharing our research and accomplishments with scientists and the public. Furthermore, the Institute is dedicated to promoting scientific interest and understanding among teachers and students to ensure that the next generation of research pioneers will be competitive in the world of science and industry. HSWRI acts as a mentor for new scientists and educators by providing research opportunities, training and "hands-on" experience through collaboration with academic institutions.

Education through Television
HSWRI's exciting research with endangered leatherback sea turtles in Florida and elephant seals in California is featured on the award-winning television series "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures." This show now reaches 95% of U.S. television households every weekend and is viewed in over 60 countries worldwide. Jack Hanna is one of America's most-beloved naturalists and a HSWRI National Capital Campaign committee member.

Inspiring the Scientists and Conservation Leaders of Tomorrow
HSWRI has also partnered with Dr. Martin Main, wildlife ecologist and associate professor at the University of Florida, to help sponsor the coastal education curriculum development for the Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP). The mission of this award-winning training program is to increase awareness, understanding, and respect of Florida's natural world among its citizens and visitors. FMNP instructors teach students about Florida's environment using scientifically-based information and interpretive techniques that prepare students to share their knowledge with others.

Sharing our Knowledge
HSWRI scientists provide over 100 public speaking engagements throughout the country and the world on an annual basis.

Through a formal science series at the Shedd Auditorium in San Diego and innovative education partnerships with the Orlando Science Center and Melbourne Beach Library, we are taking our commitment to science education into the community.
